Mechanism of Action
Strattera enhances the function of norepinephrine (NE) by blocking its reuptake. Specifically, Strattera blocks the NE reuptake transporter located on the presynaptic neuron. This increases the concentration of the NE in the synaptic cleft and enhances the forward transmission of NE. Strattera is selective and has minimal affinity for other nonadrenergic receptors or for serotonin or dopamine transporters or receptors.
Figure below provides a schematic diagram of the proposed mechanism of action of Strattera.
